This is the official detgoth-l FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document version 1.0.3 updated on Friday, July 30 1999. This document is not yet complete and no answers are set in stone. The users of the detgoth-l mailing list contributed to the creation of this document, and it was transcribed and converted to HTML by Mac (macross@digitalangel.com). Send new information, questions and error corrections to faq@detgoth.com or post them to the detgoth-l mailing list. The most  recent revision of this FAQ will be posted to detgoth-l the first week of every month, as well as made available continuously at the http://www.detgoth.com website.

1.0 What is detgoth-l?

Detgoth-l is an electronic mailing list used by people living in or around the
Michigan area who share an interest in Gothic, Industrial and Electronic
music, lifestyle, culture and community. Special emphasis is placed on
community building. Detgoth-L should not be considered a replacement for
the offline local scene, but instead as a device for use in stregnthening it.

1.2 How do I subscribe?

To subscribe to detgoth-l, simply send email to
detgoth-request@detgoth.com containing the following line : subscribe
Please note: you must send the mail from the email address you wish to
recieve your subscription at, or the listserver will ignore the message. This
is a security feature to prevent unwanted subscriptions.

1.3 How do I UNsubscribe?

To UNsubscribe from detgoth-l, send email to
detgoth-request@detgoth.com containing the following line: unsubscribe
You can only be unsubscribed from the address you have subscribed to
the list. This is a security feature to prevent unwanted unsubscriptions. If
you are unable to unsubscribe, please contact the moderator for help.

1.4 How do I stay subscribed but get less mail?

If you would like to stay on the list, but don't want a lot of mail, you can
subscribe to the list in Digest mode. Digest mode will compile all the
messages for the day and send it to you in one large email every evening.
To subscribe to Digest mode, send email to detgoth-request@detgoth.com
with the following line: subscribe. Once subscribed, send a second
message to detgoth-request@detgoth.com of digest=true. This will put
your subscription in digest mode. To return to normal mode, simply send a
         message reading digest=false.

For more help on specific commands, send the command help to the
         detgoth-request@detgoth.com address.

1.5 How do I post?

To Post a new message to the list, address the mail to
detgoth@detgoth.com and write your message as usual. To post a reply to
an ongoing discussion, simply use the reply feature of your email program.

1.6 What subjects am I allowed to discuss?

It would be easier to list what subjects are NOT allowed. While the focus
of the list is clearly centered around things relating to Gothic, Industrial
and Electronic music, people and events in and around Michigan, diversity
is encouraged and plenty of silly and serious subjects are discussed with
equal interest. The best guideline would be to use common sense, good
judgement and proper netiquette. Whatever you decide to write, please
remember to "say it with SUBSTANCE". Since a mailing list is entirely
text-based, it is a writer's medium. Express yourself! Read and be read!

1.6.1 What is netiquette?

Netiquette is etiquette for the internet. Small things like quoting only what
is needed in a reply (we've already ready it once, we want to know what
YOU have to say about it!), keeping your signature under 6 lines (4 lines is
considered the ideal) and taking private discussions off list into private
email are all prime examples of netiquette.

1.6.2 What are the rules?

         1. Please don't post completely frivolous messages such as one line
messages, "me too!" messages, or quote the entirety of large messages
when only a line or two is sufficient. This is standard netiquette.

         2. Messages posted to DETgoth should be treated as private
correspondence; thus, not quoted anywhere else without the consent of all
quoted parties. Under no circumstances should posts to DETgoth be
carbon copied (cc'd) to any other address; especially other mailing lists,
         web archiving CGIs, or newsgroups.

         3. Please don't post messages about administrative and technical issues to
the elist itself. Contacting the moderators directly is the speediest process
to get an authoritative answer to your problem.

         4. No files of any kind should ever be transferred via these mailing lists. Be
wary of sending encoded attachments, such as MIME attachments, as that
is sometimes an email client's default. Likewise, keep messages to a
reasonable length; please split them into multiple messages if they go over
         30k.

5.Bouncing messages are a true bane of administration. Please avoid
mailbox overloads on your site. If this seems of concern, consider
         switching to Digest format.

These rules were originally written by Cliff Low for the necronomi.com
mailing lists and were edited for use on DETgoth by Macross. The Guide
to netiquette document at http://www.fau.edu/netiquette/net/dis.html was
also used in creating these rules.

1.7 If I'm having trouble with the list or a user on the list, who do I
      contact?

While this is an extremely rare situation, it does happen on occasion. If a
certain member of the list is creating a disturbance in relation to the list or
other users of the list, contact the moderators personally at
911@detgoth.com. Likewise, if there is a technical issue involving the
listserver or website, contact the moderator directly instead of posting the
question or complaint to the list.

1.7.1 What is the duty of the Moderator?

It is the duty of the moderator to encourage discussion, welcome new
users, host offline meetings, enforce the rules when needed and offer
         assistance where it is required.

1.8 What is a Lurker?

A Lurker is a user who is subscribed to the list and reads the messages,
         but does not post replies.

1.8.1 Should I lurk?

Yes! There is no crime in lurking, and it is highly encouraged for new users.
Read the list traffic for a week or two to get the feel for the list and what
kind of discussions are taking place.

1.8.2 How long should I lurk?

At least one week. If you are comfortable with whats going on after 7 days,
jump right in and post an introduction. We're all very anxious to meet you.
If you do not wish to post, then you are free to lurk for the entire time you
         are subscribed.

1.9 Will my address be sold or spammed?

Absolutely not. All user lists on Necronomi.com are private property and
are not released to the public at any cost. Users who do not post to the list
         will always remain anonymous.

2.0 What is this Gothic-Industrial Community thing?

The Gothic-Industrial community is, at heart, the people. Those of us who
take an interest in and in some way participate within the subculture of the
local geographic area. Using mailing lists like this one, going to shows,
clubs and coffee houses, playing in a local band, DeeJaying, buying music
from local artists, writing fanzines and webpages, etc etc are all ways of
being a part of and supporting the community.

2.1 What is Gothic?

If you have to ask... you will never get the same answer twice.

2.1.1 What is a net.goth?

What started off as a joke eventually became a cherished moniker.
Basically, anyone who considers themself a part of the gothic culture and
uses a computer on a regular basis can call themselves a net.goth.

2.1.2 What is a det.goth?

         A det.goth is any user of the detgoth-l mailing list. A Det.goth doesn't
have to be a net.goth and a net.goth of corse, wont always be a det.goth.
For those who dislike any labels, satirical or not, relax, calling yourself
det.goth or net.goth is not mandatory in the least.

2.2 Who can be a part of the community?

Anyone who has an interest in it. Music lovers, music makers, fans and
promoters, bar hoppers and club owners all. There really are no
         restrictions.

3.0 Do you do anything together besides send email back and forth?

Yes. As mentioned above, the mailing list is not a replacement for the
actual scene in Michigan, it is only another way to spread information and
ideas. We often get together for pot-luck dinners, movies, concerts and
         parties we call Meshes.

3.2 How can I find other Det.goths at clubs and shows?

This is a bit tricky, since it's usually pretty dark at the places we all like to
hang out. Look for the det.goth patch (a little purple bat and the work
det.goth) sewn or painted on garments, or the word det.goth on the back of
         jackets.

3.2.2 Where can I get my own det.goth patch?

Macross and Tiffany both have a few patches left. If you see either of them
at a Party, club or show, just ask. We will have more made in the future,
and hopefully we'll get some stickers to.
